I've read several other business books and this one takes a fairly different approach. Some of it is pretty original and unique which is why this book gets a pretty high rating from me. The message is pretty simple yet very hard to accomplish. Basically the book is asking you to be original in the type of company that you create, or the types of things you do whether it be acting or playing music. The ongoing message of this book is to try and 'create' something that has not been created before rather than just minimally improving something that already exists. The book is short enough to not be drawn out like some other business books. It's concise in its message and has some valuable suggestions that you might not have thought of before.
The aspect that Zero to One doesn't go into much detail is how to create a successful business. For sure there are suggestions and a few examples, but if you're the type of person that needs everything drawn out to you in simple English and step by step this book may not be of much help to you. But then again if you're that type of person, creating a business may not be the best choice for you anyway.
The best thing about Zero to One is the fact that it really does encourage people to think outside of the box. None of us really know what the future holds in terms of new products. We don't even know what it will be like five years from now. The emphasis that innovators now need to really focus on creating new inventions rather than just improving a product barely enough to make it worth buying. People are just looking for quick money rather than trying to improve all of humanity. The growth of innovation has slowed so much in the last 15 years or so. Peter Thiel and many other entrepreneurs out there are urging people to start thinking less about themselves and more about what they can do to create something that truly is amazing.
If you're looking for a business book that is a little different from others this one is worth a shot. It's an easy read that shouldn't take you long to read at all.
